Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee

17.02.2014

In case you are wondering why I’m writing this one in English, it’s mainly because I feel like it.

Seinfelds’ web series ’somewhat’ descriptively entitled Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is in its third season. To an occasional by-passing viewer it comes across as a pointless show in which Jerry drives his showbiz buddies and colleagues around and they talk and then - nothing happens. Another show about nothing. And that people who do watch it on a regular basis do so primarily to see famous comedians chat. But it’s not. It’s really not.

It’s a gem. It is a very nicely moulded, laid-back concept that allows certain things to emerge that otherwise, in a plot driven, character engaging, situation developing, action demanding scenario wouldn’t. Nor it would in a standard interview. This hangout concept allows comedians to present themselves in an unburdened way. And no one seems as unburdened as Jerry himself who in one episode says that he’s fine with doing nothing and that he’s doing this because he had to do ’something’.

Throughout the years I’ve studied his work, but I also studied him as a person caught up in a comedians’ career. And before this show I thought I’ve gotten to know him thanks to the interviews and above all thanks to two documentaries: the one about how the Seinfeld sitcom was created and the Comedian, the documentary witnessing his comeback to stand-up after a decade of absence. The new start from scratch.

But this project revealed a side of him that was not that perceivable in those previous instances. The fact that, career wise, he is the epitome of easy-going. Maybe that is the key to his success. In a business where everyone else is jumping on one leg juggling five operating chainsaws at the same time trying to get some attention, he’s a guy who simply let success happen to him. Worked constantly, stayed on course and when the door eventually opened – elegantly walked in. Meanwhile noticing the fancy vault, the massive black painted iron door handle and thinking about a potential bit about it.

And Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is similar in a way. It lets things happen. If the car brakes, they don’t cut it out. If it brakes several times, it all stays in along with Jerry’s frustration and Gad Elmalehs’ consecutive discomfort. You can sense that pulling the thoughts out of Todd Barrys’ head is like pulling teeth in the 5th century because that’s who Todd Barry is – an awkward guy. Doing awkward comedy. Then again, we get to see Leno, a guy forever marked as the one who stole his friends’ job, presented as a thoughtful mentor. And Howard Stern as a nervous wreck. Some of the guests perform more, some less, but with or without the apparent attempts to entertain the viewer there is always a feeling of intimacy and sincerity in the conversation despite the filming crew running around them or random pedestrians doing their own ‘filming’.

The dialogues are filled with showbiz particles, priceless glitters, things like »don’t ever get too big to not use your friends« or »that’s a panel story, nothing better than a bit, a bit is a bar of gold«. These I cherish the most.

The car part seems unnecessary, but aside the fact that it represents Jerry, nice shots of automobile aesthetics offer a cosy feeling of familiarity and expectation each time the video begins. The numerous shots of bubbling coffee being poured and stirred – some of those I could live without.

zivjo perica!

    andrej

Zdravo Andrej! Seinfelda doživljam kot vrhunskega obrtnika stand-up besedil.

In, kurc, dobra. :)

Hvala še enkrat in lep pozdrav,
    Andrej.
